Willow fascine mattresses provide a proven, economical and long lasting solution to combat severe erosion in inter-tidal and estuarine river environments.
Brushwood mattresses have been used for centuries to control erosion in tidal and fast flowing rivers. In these conditions normal hard engineering solutions are sometimes considered to be high risk from both a technical and health & safety perspective. Soft engineered solutions can be up to 40% cheaper than traditional sheet piling or rock revetment.
Fascine mattresses are made from bundles of willow branches, known as faggots. The brushwood mattress is then formed by layers of faggots held by a grid of fixing posts which are usually anchored into position by tying wire or rocks and boulders.
