Historically, the most commonly used plant for horizontal flow reed bed systems, certainly in the UK has been Phragmites australis, the Common Reed. We grow them from seed in the nursery and always have a good stock available. We have been supplying one of our customers this week who has been using them in sewage treatment reed bed systems they are refurbishing for a utilities company.
